This event is scheduled for the last weekend in March as this is around the time of the Spring and Autumn equinoxes in the northern and southern hemi- spheres respectively, which allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' action. Earth Hour is a global campaign to showcase what can and is being done all over the world to combat climate change. It is a worldwide initiative showing how individuals, communities, businesses and governments can address the threat of global warming if we resolve to work on it together. While Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues (its initial objective), there's more to it than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It's all about environmental consciousness, giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future for our planet. Climate change (global warming) is the most significant threat to life on Earth. One way to slow the current rate of climate change and ensure a more sustainable future is for each one of us to make small adjustments to the way we live. Visit the sections on this website to see what you can do to make a difference. The highlight of the Earth Hour campaign will see the world's most iconic landmarks go dark for one designated hour, as people across the globe of different races, religions, cultures and socio-demographic turn off their lights, united in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common - our planet. Please turn off your lights for one hour at 8.30pm on March 26th in your local time zone By registering a commitment to Earth Hour 2011, we are pledging to turn our lights off for an hour at 8.30PM on 26 March. Participation in Earth Hour is a sign of your support for action on climate change. It is a pledge to show leadership amongst your friends, family, colleagues and competitors in the work needed to limit global warming by adopting low-carbon lifestyle habits and sustainable business practices on an on-going basis. You don't need to turn off all your electricity (like your fridge), nor should you turn off safety or security lighting. Earth Hour only asks that you turn off non-essential lighting. This year sees the 5th Earth Hour. Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness. In 2009, Earth Hour was taken to the next level with hundreds of millions of people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it was not about what country you're from, but instead, what planet you're from. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world's largest global climate change initiative. On Saturday 27 March, Earth Hour 2010 became even larger with 128 countries and territories partaking in the global display of climate action. Buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off their lights. People across the world turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common - our planet. |

On March 26th have friends or family over for a candle lit dinner party (using beeswax candles). Use organic or locally produced foods, or serve cold fresh food dishes. |
Households Earth Hour wants each individual to understand that electricity consumption is a direct contributor to global warming and that small actions by every individual can make a big difference. If all households simply turn off unused lighting and appliances on standby at the power point, it will reduce millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas per annum. (See Reduce Electricity for many other things you can do to reduce your electricity consumption) Commercial Sector If the commercial sector turns off lights when buildings aren't in use and combines this action with other cost effective technology, they can reduce lighting emissions significantly, and will save millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Earth Hour aims to show these companies how easy and cost efficient these changes can be through case studies of companies that have already achieved massive reductions in their emissions. |
